    Sheffield - England's greenest city

It's a surprising fact but it would be hard to find a city with more open green space than Sheffield.

Despite its urban location almost three-quarters of the city is taken up by natural vegetation and waterways.

More than a third of the city is located in the Peak District National Park - no other city has a National Park within its boundary.

In addition you'll find 150 woodlands and 50 public parks all within Sheffield and it is rumoured that there are 4 mature trees to every person living here!

Over 44 per cent of Sheffield residents live within a five minute walk of a wood and half the city's population live within 15 minutes of the open countryside. Imagine that!

one of the safest cities in the UK according to Government crime statistics.

Sheffield is an exciting and welcoming place to live and study. In fact it's one the UK's most popular student destinations - here are just some of the reasons why.

    Sheffield facts and figures

    • England's fourth largest city with a population of over 500,000
    • located in the centre of the UK, enjoying excellent transport links to all major cities and airports - Manchester is the nearest international airport
    • plenty to see and do - including great shopping, fantastic sites, some of the best theatre in the UK, award winning art galleries and museums and outstanding sport facilities
    • one of the greenest cities in Europe - one third of the city lies within the Peak District National Park
    • a very compact and accessible city thanks to its comprehensive transport network
    • a rich and diverse population, with residents of all nationalities and cultures
    • one of the UK's most welcoming cities - Sheffield people have a well-deserved reputation for their friendliness and hospitality, so it's easy to feel at home here
    • international foods are easily available in the many international food shops and markets around the city
    • The first city to be called a 'city of sanctuary'  - a Place of safety because of it's welcoming people especially to asylum seekers and refugees.

We love the fact that although Sheffield is a major city, and developing all the time, it has kept its sense of community. This is a friendly, safe and affordable place to make your home. Everything is within walking distance and the campus is a very short walk from the city centre.

In Sheffield you can enjoy sophisticated fast-paced city life and yet in 20 minutes you can be in the middle of beautiful countryside.

Shopping in Sheffield

Shopaholics will be in their element. The city centre has all the well known High Street names and department stores, or you can wander through the street market and pick up a bargain or two.

One of the more popular areas is Devonshire Quarter, where you will find boutiques and the more alternative, individual shops from urban street style to designer labels.

Meadowhall

Meadowhall is one of the largest shopping malls in the UK. With over 270 stores you will be able to find anything you need here. There is also a cinema and restaurants in case you want to relax for a bit from shopping.

Meadowhall is easily reached directly from the University of Sheffield supertram stop and the journey takes about 20 minutes.

Cost of Living in Sheffield

Sheffield and the surrounding region offers one of the best value environments to live in, meaning your income goes further and offers you a higher standard of living than many other parts of the country.

Housing remains competitively priced locally, and the general cost of living is one of the lowest in the UK at just 90per cent of national average, and fully one-quarter lower than the cost of living in London.

With some of the lowest utility costs and personal tax rates in Europe - the latter leaving you with ten per cent more of your salary than in Italy, Denmark and Sweden - it is clear that Sheffield offers its residents excellent value for money.

What’s to buy or rent in the city centre?

By far, the most popular and commonly available accommodation for professional people is a two bedroom apartment.

Studios and one bedroom apartments are also available and occasionally accommodation with a larger number of bedrooms can be found, though these are few and far between.

The following table includes some indicative current prices (as of April 2007) of rental properties and properties for sale in Sheffield city centre from local estate agents.
